Steve: "Have To Make Possession Count"

28 October 2015

Steve Davis says his Crewe team need to become more clincial to turn possession into chances.

Steve Davis appreciates that his Crewe Alexandra side have to become more ruthless when we are on top in games. The Alex boss, his staff and players have analysed the match DVD from our 2-0 defeat at Blackpool at the weekend and he was disappointed that we didn’t take advantage of our possession, especially in the first half.

Neil McDonald’s Seasiders certainly stepped up their performance in the second half at Bloomfield Road but they needed a touch of luck with their first goal with Hayden White’s shot taking a wicked deflection off the back of James Jones.

Blackpool sealed the three points late on from the penalty spot when Chris Atkinson tripped David Norris.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We have gone through the DVD of the game and I didn’t think there was much between the two sides. I thought we played reasonably well in both halves and I thought we were the better team in the first half but Blackpool played better in the second half. That was the difference.

“Their manager (Neil McDonald) was right when he said that we didn’t punish them when we were on top in the game. We were not dangerous enough in the final third although we had more possession than them and had more time in their final third than they did in ours.

“I thought it was a fairly even game but we were punished by a deflected goal. The lad’s shot was going wide until it hit Jonah and flew in the opposite direction. I thought it might need something like that to break the deadlock and they got the break and we didn’t.

He added: “That was the fine margin in the game and we have to keep going and hope that some our luck changes.”
