Steve: "Hard To Take For Everyone"

17 October 2015

Steve gives his post match reaction after his Alex side are beaten in stoppage time.

"It is hard to take because I thought we looked every bit as good as Gillingham today and haven't got anything to show for our efforts. The positive they can all take from it is that we have just matched the top team in this league. They have shown that they can do it. They have to have that belief and take it on. It is the same sort of challenge at Burton on Tuesday but no-one gave us a chance at Barnsley and we surprised everyone there with three points. We will dust ourselves off and go there on Tuesday and have a real go again."

"They are the best wins for a manager when they come like that and the worst for the losing manager and I'm sure if you speak to Justin (Edinburgh) he will say the same. He will know that his side were in a right game today.

"The disappointing thing was that we couldn't replicate our first half performance in the second half. We need to try and piece those two halves together and if we can then we would have a very good chance but I can't be too critical of the players because I thought we deserved a draw.

"They came out second half and had a good 15/20 minutes. They hit the post and could have scored but we held in there and got ourselves back into it and looked a threat at times on the break without having that real cutting edge. We were back in it at 0-0 and that was the most likely result but we haven't defended well, they had a bit of luck with a deflection and their lad has cut in and bend it in the top corner.

"We know that when we are top in games that we have to take those chances. We have to put them away because it gives you the confidence to go on but we didn't. I thought we were excellent in the first half and they didn't cause us any problems. They have had a great start and have good players and we were the better side in the first 45 minutes certainly.

"They are at the top of the league and we are at the bottom and today you wouldn't have known. There was nothing between the two teams and I thought we were the better side in that first half. We had the majority of the possession and created two really good chances through Chris Atkinson and Adam King. If King scores right before half time we go in deservedly 1-0 up at half time and have something to build on.

It was hard to take for boss Steve Davis and his players after they put everything into getting a result against the top team in League One. After the game, Steve told crewealex.net: "It is difficult to find the words because the players gave everything they had and deserved something from the game today.

Rory Donnelly's stoppage time winner sent Justin Edinburgh's side to top of the League One standings but they were certainly made to work for their three points by a spirited and hard working Crewe side this afternoon.

The Alex had enough good chances in the first half to have gone in a goal or two ahead at the interval but we were undone by Donnelly's 92nd minute winner after we failed to clear our defensive lines with any real conviction.
