Ray Set For Specialist

George in consultation today as recovery starts

Crewe Alexandra defender George Ray will visit a specialist today after cracking his cheekbone during an aerial challenge against Wigan on Tuesday night.

The meeting will decide whether an operation is needed and should help shed some light on length of time he'll be missing from action.

Steve Davis is already without centre back Harry Davis through injury, leaving Ben Nugent and Jon Guthrie as the only experienced players for the position ahead of the trip to Barnsley.

The boss told www.crewealex.net: "He's gone this morning to see the specialist in Liverpool to have a look at the cheek to see whether it needs an operation or whether he thinks it will just heal.

"There's a crack in the cheekbone and i think it's just gone in slightly so he's going to have a look at that for us.

"You see a lot of players these days wearing protective masks and such but i'm not too sure what stage you can wear one and play but it's too soon for George at the moment. We'll know a lot more about the timescale after today.

"With Harry missing too, we'll have to go with the two-left-footed centre halfs in there. Jon wants to be considered as a centre half and now he's got to take his chance."
