Boss says returning midfielder is pushing for a recall.

Crewe Alexandra midfielder James Jones is pushing his claim for a return to the starting XI after impressing for the Development Squad and when coming off the bench in the second half at the Pirelli Stadium last night. Jones, 19, replaced the unlucky Chris Atkinson in the Alex midfield as boss Steve Davis wanted ‘someone to take responsibility and put their foot on the ball’.

Jones, who played close to an hour for the Under-21s against Nottingham Forest on Monday afternoon, certainly influenced the game against Burton Albion and he played a key role in helping us earn a point and a clean-sheet.

Steve Davis told the club’s official web-site: “I wanted someone to come on and put their foot on the ball. I want us to play a bit more football and Chris was the unlucky one really to come off because he has been fine.

“Adam (King) is more of a runner and Foxy (David Fox) is another who likes to put his foot on the ball. It was a bit frantic and fast in there and I just felt that Jonah would offer us a bit more composure on the ball. He gave us a bit more control.

“He is ready to come back in if needs be. He was telling me he was alright before he had even come back for the Under-21s! He has a great attitude and doesn’t like missing games.

“He has only played one 90 minutes so far in his recovery so we still have to take our time with him, but I thought he did well when he came on, especially as he had played an hour for the Under-21s the day before. “
