Crewe hopeful that Ray's cheek will heal naturally.
Crewe Alexandra are hopeful that defender George Ray will avoid needing surgery on his fractured cheekbone. Ray visited a consultant in Liverpool on Friday and the feedback was encouraging.
The centre-half suffered the nasty facial injury during our clash with Wigan Athletic in the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy and was briefly knocked unconscious following the clash of heads with Francisco Junior.
It is hoped that the cheekbone will heal naturally rather than needing an operation and Ray is open to the idea of wearing a protective mask once he is fit to play.
Crewe are without their other senior centre half Harry Davis after he underwent surgery on his knee.
Ben Nugent and Jon Guthrie helped the club to their second win of the season at Barnsley on Saturday with youngster Toby Mullarkey named on the first team bench for the first time in his career as defensive back up.
