Saunders Wants To Seize Opportunity

5 November 2015

Youngster determined to show that he can score the goals we need.

Young striker Callum Saunders is hoping that his all-round performance in helping the club record their first home of the season over Sheffield United will see him given more chances in the starting XI.

Saunders, 20, has had to wait patiently for his opportunity but he has handed his chance against the Blades last weekend as Steve Davis chose to switch to 4-4-2.

The willing Saunders made some excellent runs and linked up well with the club’s big Canadian International Marcus Haber and he made a nuisance of himself to help the ball drop to Ryan Colclough who volleyed home the only goal of the game. The result ended our long wait for three home points and the hard working Saunders left the field to a standing ovation from the home faithful when he was replaced by midfielder Chris Atkinson late on.

It was Saunders’ first League start after previously facing Sheffield United in an FA Cup replay last season and now the young Welshman is hoping that he will be leading the line again when Eastleigh arrive in the same competition this weekend.

Callum told the club’s official web-site: “It was great to start my first league game and help the team get three points against a great side like Sheffield United. That first home win has been a long time coming and it has given us all a huge boost.

“I made my full debut against Sheffield United in the FA Cup last season and we didn’t win that day, so to face them again and get that first win at home had the dressing room buzzing.

“I thought I did well and kept making runs. I snatched at a chance in the first half but all I know is scoring goals and when the next chance drops, hopefully I will be able to finish it. I just keep going and hope that chances will be there for me to put away.

“I enjoyed playing in a two with Marcus Haber. I enjoyed playing with him and working off him. I enjoyed playing with a big man and running in behind. I have played in a one for two years so it was nice to have to work off someone and I thought we combined well.

Callum added: “I have had to wait for my chance but hopefully this is my time now and I can grab it.”
