Steve Davis working towards realistic targets

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis says he and his staff are filtering through the players’ available list to focus on possible transfer targets this summer. A huge number of players have again been released by Football League clubs and Davis is trimming the numbers to highlight realistic targets.

The Alex boss admits that he set his heights too high last summer, missing out on signings such as our former midfielder James Bailey, who joined Barnsley instead.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We did set our targets high last summer and I don’t regret doing that. We went for the best we thought we could get and it just didn’t happen for us.

“This year we are being more realistic when it comes to our targets. There is a large number of players that have been released and we will filter that down to the ones we think will be interested in coming here for the wages we can afford.

“The first thing is to make contact with them or their agent to see if they are interested in coming here and then to get them up and have a chat. It usually boils down to what we can offer them and although that means we miss out on a few, we want those ones who want to come here and know what it is about.

He added: “A lot of clubs have had a clear out and those players will be considering their options before deciding where to go. “
