Boss aiming to work smarter across all areas
Steve Davis says he and his staff will be looking to ‘work smarter’ after avoiding relegation on the final day of the season for the second successive season. Crewe Alexandra proved the critics wrong who had written us off before Christmas, especially after we had won just one of our opening 11 fixtures.
Crewe swung the season around beginning at Christmas and took that into 2015, and although we seemingly stumbled over the line, we still ended the season with just two defeats in the last games. Of course, Steve and his staff were the first to admit that our survival could have been less nerve wracking if we had won a couple of the home games we ended up drawing after taking the lead against Crawley, Leyton Orient and Walsall.
Two fantastic away displays at Sheffield United and Coventry, as well as collecting a point at Peterborough saw us survive by two points in the end.
The Alex boss admitted to crewealex.net: “We will be looking at all areas of the club and what we can do better. The main thing for us is to make sure we improve our recruitment and that we start the season a lot better. We have had to play catch-up for the past two seasons.
“From where we were in October, I cannot fault the lads for their effort. They managed to turn it around against all the odds and they deserve credit for that.
“We will look to work smarter and make sure we try and stay ahead of the other teams that will be competing us against us at this level. We don’t have the budgets of a Preston, Bristol or even a Leyton Orient but we have to try and do our best and make sure we are prepared as we can be.
He added: “It is such a strong league and we are looking at ways to improve all the time. That is one thing we always do as a football club and if that means juggling things around and implementing new ideas then we will do it. I have a lot of ideas, some of them we won’t be able to do because of the finances but some things we will be able to do certainly.”
