"The Challenge Is There For Us"

Boss looks forward to really competitive League One.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says he is relishing the chance to compete in League One again next season. The Railwaymen survived on the final day of the season to secure their status at this level and although we are set to face the possibility of eight clubs with past Premier League experience, the Alex boss says he is enjoys proving the critics wrong.

The Alex boss admits that is difficult to compete with the budgets that some clubs at League One now enjoy, but says that there is no reason why his team cannot upset those odds and get results.

Crewe won away at Sheffield United last season to ease our relegation fears and the club were one of only five to defeat runaway champions Bristol City.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We cannot compete with some of the budgets in League One but on our day we can compete. Bristol City had one of the largest budgets and Steve (Cotterill) bought in some real quality in the summer but we managed to beat them at our ground.

“We won at Sheffield United and held Preston to a draw. We can compete and the trick is to just to do that on a more consistent basis. There is no reason why despite having a reported £15 million budget next season, we cannot go to Wigan and put on a performance.

“That is the challenge for us and we enjoy proving people wrong. I think we have managed to do that over the last couple of seasons when a lot of people were saying we were dead and buried at Christmas.

He added: “We want to do better in this league and not have to take it through to the final day. We are learning all the time and the players are a year wiser again now. The challenge is there for all of us.”
