Boss says his staff needs extra support as he aims to work smarter
Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says he would like to add staff to his sports science and medical teams, but appreciates that financially that would affect his own budget.
Davis has been critical of the fitness levels of some of his players recently and he has stressed the need for that to be addressed as we head into the 2015/16 season. The Alex boss believes that some of his players find it difficult to recover from games and find it tough going to play Saturday and then in mid-week but he is quick to point out that his sports science and medical departments do their jobs with only one member of staff whilst other League One clubs may have two, three or even four.
Steve Davis told crewealex.net: “It is all about us trying to work smarter and supporting the staff we have more. I am more than happy with the work Andy (Franks) does for us. He just needs some support because he is on his own.
“It is the same with the physio’s. Most League One clubs have at least two. We have one. We can improve by working smarter and working together. It is something we are good at this club. If you look at all aspects of the club, we all mingle in and help each other and that is great credit to us.
“We have to work even more closely though and support the staff more, so in the end we can get the very best out of the players.
“With the fitness, it can be quite easy to believe that they are fit because we have a young group. They should be fit because we don’t have senior players here. They should all be able to last the 90 plus minutes. Perhaps it is something to do with nervous tension? It is something we will assess because our recovery has to be better.
“Nothing drastic is needed. I am happy with my staff and the responsibility they have. We just need to give them some help sometimes. “
