More Realistic With Transfer Targets

7 May 2015

Boss says he wants to do more business earlier ready for pre-season.

Steve Davis says he will need to be more realistic when it comes to his netting his potential signings this summer. The Alex boss had to wait until November until he could start to bring in the calibre of player he wanted to do on loan. Crewe’s upturn in form heading into Christmas certainly coincided with the arrival of Jamie Ness, Alan Tate, Nicky Ajose and Uche Ikpeazu on loan.

The Alex boss says he has devised a more realistic target list of players to help improve the core of his side next season, but getting players in either on a permanent or loan basis is never straight forward.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “People have questioned why we didn’t do too much business in the summer and the truth is the players we wanted, we either couldn’t afford or they were not available at that time. We had to wait for their clubs to allow them to go out.

“When they were prepared to do that we managed to do it and it changed our season.

“I will have to be more realistic with our options this summer and I would like to do things earlier if we can. It will be a busy closed season for all the staff to make sure we get the players in who can make a difference for us.

“What we have to do is act more quickly. If we know that a player is interested in coming here, we need to get them up here, show them around and talk to them about what we expect and what they expect.

He added: “We will look to profile our targets a lot more, to make sure we get the right characters in, so we want to know about their lives, do they have a family, what they eat and what they get up to in their personal life. With social media and the Internet you can find out a lot more about people nowadays and we will do that.”
