Bakes says he would welcome back goalkeeping coach Fred Barber like a shot

Neil Baker, the club’s assistant manager says he would welcome back goalkeeping Fred Barber like a shot if Crewe Alexandra are in the market for a goalkeeping coach again this summer.

Much of that will depend on the future of the club’s Scottish goalkeeper Scott Shearer, who was understudy to Ben Garratt last season before moving to Burton Albion on loan in the New Year. Shearer’s dual role also saw him coaching the England Youth International goalkeeper before Barber was recruited to replace him once he has signed on the Brewers.

Neil Baker told crewealex.net: “Fred was his own man and did things his own way. He was terrific around the place and was a very experienced coach.

“He worked the goalkeepers extremely hard and was good to have here. If we were in the market for a coaching coach again then I’m sure he would be one we would consider again. He did a great job and I think he helped improve both Ben and Paul when he was here.

“Of course, much will depend on what Scott chooses to do this summer. He wants to carry on playing and we respect that and if he can get fixed up then I am sure Fred would come into our thoughts again.”
