Boss says underdog tag may suit us at Ashton Gate

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis says that his side will visit the league leaders this evening in a positive frame of mind. With the pressure off the Alex, the underdog tag may suit us at Ashton Gate like it did at Gresty Road back in December when we managed to collect all three points thanks to Jamie Ness’ wonderful strike. Crewe upset the odds that day as the bottom club at the time beat top.

Crewe travel to Ashton Gate looking for a bonus result against the current league leaders and the Alex boss says the approach will be the same as it was at Gresty Road.

Steve told crewealex.net: “The team talk is based around positivity and having the freedom to go out and express themselves. We are not expected to get anything as the underdogs, so that may suit us.

“We have to try and enjoy it, playing against the best team in the league. These are the games we want to play in and challenge ourselves. That is why we are fighting to stay in this league.

“We will need to be resilient and hard to break down like we were against them at our place. We had to ride our luck at times on that day but we defended well and managed to see it through. There is no reason why we cannot be like that again.

“I always want us to be positive and although it will be difficult, like it was on Saturday, we don’t just sit behind the ball and hope something happens.

He added: “I picked the strongest team I could with what we had available at Preston but I may look to change it. Saying that I did that against Rochdale to try and freshen things up and it didn’t have the desired effect that night. “
