Still As Many As Ten Teams Still In It

Boss gears up for the business end of the season

Steve Davis says his Crewe Alexandra side still have plenty of work to do to avoid being dragged back into the bottom four of the division. A well-deserved 2-0 win over fellow strugglers Scunthorpe United saw us increase the gap at the bottom to a healthy seven points, but Davis has warned that things can alter very quickly.

The Alex boss still feels that as many as ten teams are still vulnerable as we enter the business end of the season.

Crewe face the top two teams in the division in the next two fixtures and Davis knows that the situation can change quickly if you cannot pick up consistent points.

Steve told “I would be surprised that the bottom four now will be the bottom four that go down. Someone usually gets out of it. Last season, it was ourselves and Notts County who everyone had written off.

“We won’t be writing anyone off and that means we have to do our job and remain in control of our own destiny. The players have done remarkably well to get out of it, now we have to increase that gap at the bottom. It is seven points at the moment but that can change quickly.

“You can go on a great run like Barnsley have done to be in with a shout of the play-offs or you can go on a bad run and see yourselves right back in it.

“I think there are still nine, ten, eleven teams still in it. You have to keep going and looking to pick up points. History suggests that you will need 52, 53 points to be sure and that is our first aim. If we can get to that level of points then we will look at it and look to finish as high as possible.

since I came into the club, so that is a nice target to go for but we have a lot of work to do.”th“The best so far is 13
