Improvement Needed On The Road

Steve Davis is looking for his side to become tighter and more dangerous in away games

Steve Davis has been pleased with the way his side has defended at home in recent weeks but he wants that defensive steel to continue when we go away. Crewe have now not conceded a goal at Gresty Road in the last four games. This impressive run of home clean-sheets has come on the back of a 5-0 home defeat by MK Dons at the end of January.

The Crewe boss was extremely disappointed to have conceded four goals at Rochdale last Tuesday night and he wants our resilience at home to be transferred into the remaining away games.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We have been much tighter at the back in the second half of the season, especially at home. We have had some blips along the way like the MK Dons and Rochdale games, but overall we have been much tighter than we were in the opening few months of the season.

“Our home record has been excellent in recent months and we have lost two in 14 games, so that has been the platform for us to go on and get out of the bottom four.

“We have not been as tight at the back away from home and we have drawn too many blanks for my liking. We haven’t scored enough goals away from home of late and that has to improve.

“It is important to keep the game tight and if we can do that and create more chances then we have a good chance of picking up the points we need.

“We have handled playing under pressure at the end of the season well over the last couple of seasons and we need to do that again. There was an edginess to the game on Saturday with both sides aiming not to make a mistake, especially in the first half, but we increased the tempo in the second half and were much better.”
