Boss Admits Selection Dilemma

Boss praises Guthrie response after Rochdale show

Boss Steve Davis admits that he will have a selection dilemma to make if George Ray declares himself fit and available for the weekend trip to Preston. Ray missed last weekend’s win over Scunthorpe after picking up a rib injury against Rochdale. A scan has shown that Ray suffered severe bruising rather than any fracture and if he can train with no discomfort over the next couple of days then he will be back in consideration for Deepdale.

But the Alex boss was also delighted with the performance of Ray’s replacement Jon Guthrie in the 2-0 win over the Iron and he could name an unchanged back line.

Steve admitted to crewealex.net: “I thought Jon filled in really well with George missing. I was pleased with the way he responded after the Rochdale game when he played full-back. He tired in the second half there and gave away a poor penalty but he was solid against Scunthorpe.

“He was solid and reliable and that is all we ask of our defenders, not to make mistakes and be dependable in their defending.

“George suffered the injury at Rochdale and that is unfortunate, but it happens and I will have to look at it and make a decision. We may need George for his extra height and ability in both boxes and that is the decision I will have to make at the end of the week after what I see in training.”
