James Collins believes that captain Matt Tootle is keen to remain at Crewe.
James Collins believes that Matt Tootle is keen to commit his future for Crewe Alexandra. The club captain is out of contract this summer and will become a free agent but first-team coach Collins feels that Tootle just wants to resolve his future and return to playing.
The24-year-old full-back endured an injured plagued season last time out with a troublesome ankle injury limiting him to just 18 appearances in all competitions. It was the first time that the Academy graduate had ever really experienced an injury lay-off but he is determined to put that disappointing campaign behind him and make a fresh start for the forthcoming season.
Collins says that Tootle is one of the most loyal players he has ever met in his career and he hopes that the talented defender will elect to remain with us after we made him a new contract.
Collins told the club’s official web-site: “I’ve had a few conversations with Matt and I know that he is keen to sign. As with all contracts there are a few things that need ironing out, that is the same everywhere. He has just had a new baby with his partner so he has some things to deal with at home as well.
“Matt loves the football club and I don’t use that word lightly. I know he does. He genuinely cares about the people at the club, the supporters and the staff.
“I’m sure he just wants to make sure things are right for him. We know what a good player Matt is. He was struck with a few injuries last season but that is football and that can happen. I think that knocked his confidence a bit, as it does with anyone.
“If we get a fit Matt Tootle back then it will be a like a new signing for us and there is no reason why he cannot get back to form and he still has time on his hands to play a higher level.”
