Exciting To See Youngsters Step Up

10 June 2015

James Collins excited to see which youngsters step up

James Collins says it is always an exciting part of the season to see which of the club’s young players have kicked on. The club’s first-team coach knows Crewe Alexandra’s Academy graduates better than most have worked so closely with most of them during his time with the Under-18s and Youth teams.

Collins told the club’s official web-site: “It is always an exciting time of the year because we have a number of young players who are now a year more experienced. The likes of James Jones and James Baillie would have benefitted greatly from last season and then Ben Garratt, Harry Davis, George Ray and Ollie Turton are another 12 months under their belts.

“They cannot be young players with promise for ever. They have played a large number of games now and have to become the more senior players if you like.

“We also have signed five young players on professional contracts and George Cooper has already made his debut, so it is always exciting to see who will come back into it and make that step up. Some kick on and adjust quickly to the new environment and others fall by the wayside.

He added: “We are working hard at making sure that fewer of our young players fall to the wayside but the young players will know that they have to work hard to make the grade. I’m sure they are looking forward to the challenge.”
