Boss Looking Forward To Derby Opener

Steve says he doesn't mind that our meeting with the Vale falls on the opening day.

. August. Crewe start the new campaign with a home game against our fiercest rivals in League One and Davis says that it is the perfect fixture to startthCrewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is hoping that the club can end eight years without a win on the opening day of the league season by overcoming near neighbours Port Vale on 8

Crewe’s last victory on the opening day of the season came in 2007 when Steve Holland’s side defeated Brighton 2-1 at Gresty Road. The club did beat Hartlepool 5-0 in the first game of the 2011/12 season but that was in the first round of the League Cup when it was played before the first league game.

Since that win over Brighton though, Crewe have lost six and drawn once at home to Rotherham United back in 2013.

Steve Davis told the club’s official web-site: “It is unusual to have a local derby on the opening day of the season. I don’t think it has ever happened before it usually happens in the first couple of months, but I don’t mind when it comes.

“It only adds an extra spice to the game and I am sure the fans will be looking forward to it already. I am sure it will be a great crowd and a great atmosphere to start the season with.

Steve added: “I’m sure the built up to it will be good and the fans will be talking about it already. We did the double over them next season and our aim will be to replicate those results. There is an extra impetus on the game because of the rivalry and we want to give our supporters something to cheer about on that first day. “
