Boss Hopeful On Captain Staying

Davis reveals talks with Matt Tootle with club chairman John Bowler.

Steve Davis is confident that club captain Matt Tootle will extend his stay with the club. The Crewe Alexandra manager has revealed that he and the club chairman John Bowler recently held talks with the 24-year-old defender regarding his future and he was greatly encouraged by Tootle’s positively to get back playing again. Tootle is out of contract this summer and is free to talk to other clubs but he continues to work on his fitness levels here with us.

Tootle endured a difficult season with an ankle injury limiting his involvement to just 18 appearances. The right-back did return to the first-team squad towards the tail end of the campaign but was an unused substitute away at Peterborough United.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I’ve spoken to Matt along with the Chairman and I’ve expressed my wish to keep him at the club.

“It was good to have that sit down talk with him and it was all very positive. All we can do is wait to see what happens but Matt has been in for most of the summer sessions and he is working as hard as anyone.

He added: “We have made him an offer of an extension and everyone knows that we want him to remain with us.”
