Ball Players Would Make Us More Flexible

Davis aiming for more fluent approach in midfield engine room.

Steve Davis believes that if he can improve his midfield this summer then that will provide more flexibility for him to switch systems. The Crewe boss has gone on record earlier this week to suggest that two ball playing midfield players remain his top priority this summer. At the moment only Chris Atkinson and youngster James Jones remain on the club’s books as senior midfield players.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “I want to add players who are comfortable on the ball. When they come through the Academy here, we know they will be technically good but it is important that we attract them from outside as well.

“I want players who are comfortable in possession and can dictate the play. If we can find them to supplement what we already have then it is gives us more flexibility to change things. Good, technical players can adapt and play in many positions.

“That would allow us to switch tactics and formation more fluently and keep the opposition guessing a bit more. I think we are good at that. I think we are capable of surprising teams.

Steve concluded: “I remember Eddie Howe and his staff telling us a few years ago that they didn’t like playing us because never knew the way we would play. That is a great compliment and it is important for us to stay ahead of the opposition if we can.”
