Agents Can Have Too Much Power Over Players

3 June 2015

Steve Davis says players shouldn't totally rely on agent to make key decisions on their careers.

Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis believes that players are becoming too influenced by the views of their agent or representatives. The Alex boss says he has greater admiration for players who know their own minds and will make the key decisions about their careers on their own.

The Alex boss, like all managers, is currently in negotiations with those players going out of contract this summer, as well trying to attract potential targets into the football club.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “The players and agents will be taking their time at the moment because the players are still being paid and there is not real need for them to rush. They will keep their options open.

“You have to hope that they will make the right decision for their careers. I do tend to think that some players, not all of them, listen to their agents too much.

“When I was a player there was no way that an agent would be deciding where I was going to play. That final decision should be with the player and players shouldn’t have to over rely on their agent to make key decisions for their careers.

“I prefer those players with a bit of character, who are strong minded and who in charge of their own destiny.”
