Steve: “We’ve Still Got To Sharpen Up”

Gaffer praises sides endeavour but insists there’s still work to be done

Alex boss Steve Davis is set to continue with his heavy pre-season fitness approach this week to ensure his squad are at their peak with just a three weeks remaining until the big kick-off.

Speaking after his sides 4-1 friendly win at Nantwich on Sunday, Steve was pleased with the work-rate of his team but insisted the work must continue to ensure his team can keep up the high-intensity play for 90 minutes.

Steve told crewealex.net: “It’s about getting the games in. I’m never too sure how to judge the performances against the local teams, but as long as the players are working hard and working and what we’re trying to get them to do then I’m happy.

“They’ve still got to sharpen up a bit more but I thought the first ten to 15 minutes we were excellent, we faded a little bit later on in the first half after the goal. I thought generally they worked hard, they’re getting a good understanding together and I was generally pleased by that.

“For a lot of the lads it was their first 90 minutes of the season and you could see them struggling towards the back half of each half. We started intensely but you could see that slowing down so we’ve still got to work on that to build that up, but the attitude is terrific and they’re doing everything they’re asked to do at the moment.

“We’ll continue with the heavy schedule and programme even though we’ve got games, we’ll still be training before them and working every day to get things right if we have to.”
