Steve Davis says that midfielder David Fox is in ‘pole position to become his next summer signing’ after the numbers for previous targets Jamie Ness and John Lundstram became too high. The Crewe Alexandra boss although frustrated in missing out on those two, quickly moved on to his next intended target in the experienced Fox.
The 31-year-old midfielder, who has enjoyed two promotions with Norwich City, would battle it out for a midfield place along new summer signings Billy Bingham and Adam King, as well as James Jones and Chris Atkinson.
Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We haven’t been able to get the deal for John (Lundstram) over the line. It just fell short at the end and that can happen in negotiations. You have to move on and we have done that.
“I had a list of nine players at the beginning and I would be pleased to get three of them because they are better than what we had.
“Nessy would have been happy to stay because he was settled here and in the area but we couldn’t compete with what Scunthorpe were offering him. It can be frustrating but you just have to go to the next one.
“David has a lot of experience and his attitude is great every day in training. His experience could help our young team.
He added: “He is pole position and we will continue to have discussions with his agent. We prioritised our midfield in the summer and that is near to completion. Once it is we will then move on to what else we need, a left-back, a young goalkeeper and another centre-half to give us that cover.”
