Boss Looking To Source Young Keeper

9 July 2015

Steve to assess trialist stopper in pre-season games

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis has revealed that he is trying ‘to source a young goalkeeper to challenge Ben Garratt’ for the number one spot. With the vastly experienced Fred Barber agreeing to return as the club’s goalkeeping coach for the new season, Davis will now target a younger goalkeeper to offer that competition and cover to the highly-rated Garratt.

The Alex boss has admitted that he is still having dialogue with our former loanee goalkeeper Paul Rachubka but with the former Manchester United all pursuing a coaching role, he has switched his attention to trying to find a younger goalkeeper who could eventually replace Garratt if and when he moves on.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We have a few options with the goalkeeper situation. Having Fred back with us is a great bonus and I am glad that has been resolved because I know Ben and whoever we get in will benefit from his experience.

“We are still talking to Paul but our paths may take a different path because of our situation. At the moment I am trying to source a young goalkeeper to challenge Ben and we have invited someone in on trial to have a look at him.

“A young goalkeeper would put that pressure on Ben and challenge him for the number one position. He would get some game time as well and we are looking at things long-term because we are confident that Ben will realise his potential and go on to play much higher one day.”
