Captain suffers set-back after going over on his ankle

Club captain Matt Tootle is set to miss this weekend’s home match with Gillingham after suffering an ankle injury in training. Last season’s Player-of-the-Season has suffered bruising and swelling around the ankle after going over on it in training on New Years' Day.

December with Steve Davis electing to keep faith with his impressive young full-back James Baillie. thIt is a blow for Tootle, 24, who has recently returned from injury and illness to make his comeback for the Elite Development Group. He was later named on the substitutes’ bench for the visit of Preston North on 28

Steve explained to “Matt went over on his ankle and has some bruising and swelling around it. It is a blow to lose him again but James has come in and settled in well and we have other options there.”

On a more positive note, Tootle’s vice-captain Adam Dugdale is back in training after been given the all-clear in relation to a knee problem. The centre-half visited a consultant yesterday and has been given the green light to play again. The defender missed the Christmas period after jarring his knee in training.

Steve told “Adam trained with me yesterday and was fine. He had to be cautious with his knee because he jarred it and it was causing him some discomfort, but he came in when the others were off and did some running. It felt fine and he has been able to return to training.

“He saw a consultant yesterday just to be given the all-clear and he got that, so he is fit and available again for us.”
