Davis: "Firepower Has Given Us Hope"

12 January 2015

Steve Davis says extra options up front gives us a chance of escaping the drop this season

Steve Davis admitted that Saturday’s 1-0 win over Gillingham was ‘not a classic’ but he was delighted with the three points that saw his improving Crewe side exit the bottom four for the first time since mid-August.

Crewe won 3-1 with goals from loan strikers Nicky Ajose and Uche Ikpeazu and the Alex manager believes that the enhanced firepower has given us a chance of avoiding he drop into League Two.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “It wasn’t a classic on Saturday but at this stage of the season, the results are more important to us. We are not going to play every week. You have to be sensible about that but I was pleased that we managed to see it through.

“Some of them played well, some of them were below their usual standard but all of them worked hard to make sure we got the points and that is all I can ask.

“I was delighted to take three points from a scrappy game. The conditions were difficult for both sides and we couldn’t get the ball down and play as much as we would have liked. In the wind, we had to go a little more direct which isn’t our style but we had to adapt to the conditions.

“The players we have managed to get in on loan have been instrumental to turning the season around. We had quality here all ready but we need more, especially in the forward positions.

“The extra firepower with Uche, Nicky and now Lauri has provided that threat in the final third of the pitch and we managed to score three goals at the weekend which hasn’t happened very often this season.”
