Boss Considers Going Without Sub Keeper

7 January 2015

Alex boss says he may elect to go without a reserve goalkeeper against the Gills

Steve Davis admits he will have to give some serious consideration to go into the weekend clash with Gillingham without a substitute goalkeeper on the bench. With the Alex boss agreeing to allow his reserve goalkeeper Scott Shearer to join Burton Albion on loan until the end of the season, he now has only number one Ben Garratt and Youth team goalkeeper Liam Matthews as recognised goalkeepers at the club.

The Alex boss has revealed that he would be interested in signing an unattached goalkeeper or sign one on a free transfer before the weekend as he doesn’t want to bring in another keeper in on loan.

Davis admits that he has never gone into a game without the back up of a substitute goalkeeper in his squad, but he may consider just that for the visit of Gillingham if he cannot find the right one.

Steve told crewealex.net: “I have never gone into a game without a reserve goalkeeper on the bench but a number of managers do it now to allow another out-field option from the bench.

“I have always had cover in case a goalkeeper is injured or sent off in the game. It is a risk to go into a game without having someone there just in case you might need them.

He added: “It is something I will have to think about before the weekend and we will have a look at our options.”
