Crewe to assess the former Port Vale goalkeeper as Steve steps up goalkeeper search
The former Port Vale, Lincoln City and Shrewsbury Town goalkeeper Joe Anyon is training with Crewe Alexandra. Steve Davis has made it been known that he is after another goalkeeper to offer competition and cover to his youngster Ben Garratt after agreeing to allow Scott Shearer join Burton Albion on loan until the end of the season.
Anyon, 28, is currently unattached following his release from the Shrews in the summer. The Blackpool-born goalkeeper, who came through the youth ranks at Vale Park, is hoping to secure a short term deal in the professional game.
He has previously made over 100 first class appearances for Port Vale and another 100 during his career, which has also included loan spells at Morecambe and Macclesfield.
Crewe are also looking at a young goalkeeper from Derby County. He has given been granted permission to play in two Under-21 matches for the club, which included the 3-3 draw with Barnsley yesterday.
Steve Davis told crewealex.net: “Joe has come in so we can have a look at him. He isn’t totally there fitness wise because he has been without a club since the summer but we are aware of the qualities he possesses from his time with Port Vale and a couple of other clubs after that.
“We have also taken a younger one in from Derby, just to assess his potential. We will see how he does because he could become available for us. It is something we will have to sure about and I want the right character here, who is going to push Ben.”
