Davis and his players are looking forward to the local derby and have the chance of recording their first ever league double of the Valiants following our 2-1 win over them back in September.

Ahead of this weekend’s eagerly anticipated derby, Steve told us: “We have watched a lot of Port Vale games already this season and we have an idea on how they will want to play.

“We enjoy going to Vale Park. They are always good games between the two clubs; they have certainly had that excitement and edge since I’ve been here.

“It is a very open pitch at Vale Park and there is a lot of space to exploit. What is important is being able to retain possession. It is never easy because the derby games can be frantic and physical because of the demands of the supporters.

“There are often players flying around and tackles going in but both teams will try and get the ball down and play. We always try and do that and I know Port Vale are trying to do that more under Rob Page.

“I am just looking forward to it. Hopefully we will get a bit of luck, like we did against Gillingham and we can get something from it.

“The derby is important because of what it means to the fans and both clubs but the most important thing is that there are three points up for grabs.

Steve added: “We need them to move up the table and Port Vale are just outside of the play-offs, so they will be looking for the points to keep them in touch as well.”
