Steve says he was surprised to see Gary Johnson lose his job recently

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis admits he was surprised to see Gary Johnson lose his job as manager of Yeovil Town. Johnson was dismissed just after the closure of the January transfer window and Davis believed that the experienced campaigner would be granted move time to turn things around at Huish Park.

Gary’s assistant Terry Skiverton has been placed in temporary charge, having previously managed the club himself before Johnson returned for a second spell that culminated in promotion to the Championship.

Ahead of our mid-week meeting at Gresty Road, Steve told us: “Terry knows the club inside outside. He has been there as a player, manager and assistant and he will be desperate to keep them up.

“Terry and his staff will be doing their best to get them out of it, but I was surprised that they dismissed Gary because I thought he was the man to get them out of trouble.

I thought he would have been given some time to put it right but we know in management that those opportunities sometimes don’t arise.  “Gary has got tremendous experience and had been able to bring in a few players in January to improve the team.

“The one main advantage Terry has above someone else coming in to the club is that he knows the players better than anyone.”
