Steve: "We Were Close On One"

Steve Davis reveals that club worked hard behind the scenes to be in the race for a young striker

Steve Davis has revealed to the club’s official web-site that he was close to adding another striker to his squad yesterday. The potential target had a choice of three other clubs and eventually moved to a club in our division mainly due to the location. The young forward was allowed to remain at home and travel in rather than having to uproot totally and that proved the deciding factor as the January window closed.

The Alex boss says he will revisit the loan or free market when it reopens again after a seven day grace.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We were busy on the phone yesterday as we travelled to the Youth Cup game, which was eventually called off.

“We were actually very close with a striker. He had a choice of four other clubs and elected to move to a club that was closer to his home. It was more to do with location than anything. He could remain at home and it was only a short distance to travel.

“We tried very hard with him and if we had managed to pull it off, he would have made a difference to us. It was frustrating but wasn’t for the want of trying.

“It is never easy to get a player in and the chairman was very supportive on the day. It was all in place if he wanted to come here.

“It was frustrating but we had a real go and we tried our best to get us over the line. We will re-visit the market again in a week’s time and if we can find a loan or a free transfer that would improve us then we would do it.”
