Steve: "Three Points Were Massive For Us"

7 February 2015

Alex boss gives his post reaction from the Weston Homes Community Stadium

"I wasn't too pleased with the way we saw out the final minutes and we can learn from that because it led to us being a bit edgy when we had been in control of the game, but like I say it was a great comeback from us and an important three points to take into Tuesday night against Yeovil."

"Granty played through an excellent ball for the second goal and with the only real chance he had Nicky showed his quality when tucking it away. The third goal saw Marcus, head it down and Anthony was there to finish. Marcus came on and gave us something different up there.

"Nicky did well to take it into their box and clip a cross to the far post and Lauri had the awareness to lay it off for Jonah (James Jones). I have been telling him to get closer to the front two and play off them a bit more and I was delighted that he was there on the end of it to finish it off. It was a calm finish and he deserved that first goal because he is improving with every performance and at times he was terrific for us.

"At half time, we just encouraged them because we had been playing some good football. We just wanted them to be more of a threat and we scored three really good goals. I was surprised that we managed to score three if I'm honest because I didn't see that coming from the first half in terms of chances, but they were excellent.

"They didn't create too much either in the first half and it was a game of possession, especially in the first half. I thought we were the better side in the first half and it was cruel on us to go in 1-0 down. It was the last kick of the game. Lauri gave the ball away when he was trying to find Nicky and I think George just lost his footing. Porter had a touch and put it in like he can do.

"I was pleased because the players played in exactly the way we wanted then to. We had practiced that all week with the slight change to the shape with Tate playing in front of the back four and breaking things up. He is good at that and got us playing again when we got the ball. I thought we kept possession really well, and our passing was good. It was good in the first half without us really creating those openings.

After the 3-2 win Steve told the club's official web-site: "After what happened last week against the MK Dons, we wanted to see characters emerge and make a difference in the game. We wanted them to stand up and have an influence on the game and not let it pass them by. They did that and it was a massive three points for us. We showed some character and I'm delighted that we have shown that we can come from behind to win a game.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis was delighted with the way his side came back from 1-0 down at the break to score three superb team goals in the second period and in the process claim 'three massive points'. Second half goals from James Jones, Nicky Ajose and Anthony Grant cancelled out Chris Porter's opener with the last kick of the first half and only a late flurry from the U's made it an anxious ending to an entertaining encounter in Essex.
