Defender suffering with groin injury
Crewe Alexandra’s centre half George Ray was withdrawn on the half an hour mark on Saturday after complaining of a tight groin. Ray was replaced by Anthony Stewart in the 5-0 defeat to the MK Dons. Stewart showed his versatility by switching to right-back for the second half as Steve Davis tried to provide some extra width with the introduction of young George Cooper.
Ray will be continued to assessed this week ahead of this weekend’s trip to Colchester and with Jon Guthrie still not available due to the knee injury he sustained at Notts County, Crewe could travel with just three senior centre-halves.
Steve told the club’s official web-site: “George felt his groin and it is something he has had before so as a precaution more than anything he had to come off.
He added: “He couldn’t continue and we didn’t want him to try and as a consequence make it worse. Rob Sharp will have to assess him week before we decide whether he is fit enough to travel on Friday.”
