Steve says he is not surprised to see Mathias back in England
Steve Davis has revealed to the club’s official web-site that he passed up the opportunity to re-sign Mathias Pogba after his Italian adventure turned sour. Pogba signed a six-month contract with Crawley Town after leaving Serie B side Pescara during the January transfer window.
He departed Crewe on the eve of the new season to leave Alex boss Steve Davis will just four recognised forwards and first year professionals George Cooper and Callum Saunders.
The Alex boss was clearly unhappy at the timing of Pogba’s departure and says it was one of the reasons why he wasn’t interested in bringing him back to Crewe once it was known he was available again.
Steve told the club’s official web-site: “We were offered Pogs and I’ve spoken to a few managers who asked me about him because they were offered him as well. He has been touted around clubs and Dean (Saunders) knows him well from Wrexham.
“I am not overly surprised that he is back in this country because I thought he was making the wrong decision when he left. I told him at the time that he should remain with us and develop here as a young forward.
“It was his choice to leave and in the days building up to his departure he made it very clear that he wanted to go. I didn’t like the way he left us, so close to the season because it left us light but I’m sure he looks back at that and realises he made a mistake to go to Italy.
He added: “We wish him well and hope that he gets back playing. I hope he does well just not against us.”
