Haber Has Earned His Chance

13 February 2015

Boss pleased with Haber's response after Ikpeazu moved on to Doncaster

Steve Davis says it is up to Marcus Haber to grab his opportunities with both hands after he played so impressively as a late substitute against Colchester and then as a starter against Yeovil Town on Tuesday. The Canadian target man certainly added some height and strength to our forward line against a big Yeovil side and Haber showed great skill and awareness to create the only goal of the game for his strike partner Nicky Ajose.

Haber will be hoping to get the nod for the visit of Fleetwood Town tomorrow, with the likes of Lauri Dalla Valle and George Cooper waiting for another opportunity to stake their claim to partner the in-form Ajose.

Davis was delighted with the contribution made by Haber on Tuesday night, hailing it as 'one of his finest performances in a Crewe shirt.'

The Alex boss told crewealex.net: “Marcus has done well in the last two games and has contributed in a couple of the goals. That is what he want from him and it is just a question of him becoming more consistent and doing that more often.

“He actually started really well for us when he came in the summer and he scored three goals in four games at the beginning of the season. He looked to be a really good addition for us but then he was called up by Canada a couple of times and I think that affected him.

“He came back to us not in the same sort of shape and I think he was away for around 42 days all together and that didn’t help him. It disrupted his progress and he didn’t need it at that time.

“I had a chat with Marcus about what he needed to get back in and around the team and to his credit he has really worked hard since then. Of course, Uche (Ikpeazu) going to Doncaster helped him get closer to the team but he deserves his opportunity. He has earned it.

He added: “I spoke to him before the Yeovil game about how this was his chance and how he needed to take the opportunity and in fairness he took it. I thought he was excellent and the fans could see the work he was putting in for the team. I am sure that he continues to work that hard then he will win them over and once he has got that then he has to add goals to his game as well.”
