Saunders Boosted By First Goal

16 December 2015

Boss believes Callum's first goal for the club will give him a massive confidence boost.

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that Callum Saunders will grow in confidence after scoring his first senior goal against Doncaster Rovers on Saturday. Saunders replaced the tiring Ryan Lowe to pop up in the 90th minute and slide home Ollie Turton’s low cross. Saunders’ first goal for the goal looked like being the winner until the home side staged a remarkable comeback in stoppage time to score twice and secure the points.

The Crewe boss was pleased that Saunders grabbed his first goal when coming off the bench, as it showed that the Wales Under-21 International can deliver at this level.

Steve said: “It was a real positive for us that Callum got his first goal. It showed that he can come off the bench in those circumstances and get goals. We know he is a goalscorer because he has done it all the way through and now he has shown that he can score goals in the first team.

He added: “Although we ended up losing the game, it should still give him great confidence. With him scoring in the 90th minute I am sure he would have though his goal would win us the game. That would have been brilliant for him but it wasn’t to be and in a way it must have spoilt his day. It is still something he can build on now.”
