"Our Start Has To Be Much Better"

31 December 2015

Boss frustrated as game plan was put on hold by Shrewsbury's better start on Monday.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis was hugely disappointed with the start we made against Shrewsbury Town on Monday and he is looking for a vast improvement against Coventry on Saturday. Crewe were slow out of the blocks in the opening 20 minutes against the Shrews and the visitors early pressure paid off with Larnell Cole bending home the opening goal of the game in just the 11th minute.

The Railwaymen responded well after that slow start though and Ryan Colclough equalised after 26 minutes after tucking away a shot after being found by Ryan Lowe.

Steve told the club’s official web-site: “For the opening 25 minutes we didn’t really get going and they came out on the front foot. They looked like a team that had played on Boxing Day, not one that had played 9 days ago. It was a slow start from us.

“That certainly wasn’t our intention. We spoke about them playing on Boxing Day and how we wanted to take the game to them and get on the front foot but the reverse happened. We didn’t put them under pressure and they scored an early goal because of our start. I was disappointed with that and we have to improve on that.

“We didn’t start at all well but once we equalised through Ryan, I thought we really grew into the game and got stronger. They fatigued and we went on to create some great chances but didn’t take them.

The boss added: “You always have that concern as a manager when you don’t score when you are on top in a game. They defended for their lives and we paid dearly for a lapse of concentration in the final minute. “
