"We Need To Be More Patient In Possession"

10 August 2015

Steve Davis says lessons to be learned after opening day draw.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis was pleased that his side showed some real character to pick up a point on the opening day of the season, but he is looking for improvement from his front six when it comes to being more patient in possession.

Crewe struggled to break down the Port Vale back line on too many occasions and Davis says that his players will need to be more decisive in their decision making going forward.

The Alex boss told crewealex.net: “I thought we delayed our passing too much and we were at times slow to make our minds up what to do when we were in possession.

“That can be difficult because it is a derby game and Port Vale restricted our space, but we had to be more patient in our build-up and try and get through on the outside of them. We didn’t do that enough and we found it difficult to create too many opportunities.

“It was hard to get through and we needed that extra bit of quality to open them up and I thought that improved when Ryan (Colclough) and George (Cooper) came off the bench.

“I was pleased with the way we stuck at it and the fitness was good. They kept going and we managed to get a point for their effort. “
