Steve Davis gives crewealex.net his post match reaction following 0-0 draw with Vale.
The boss added: "I just felt the game was lacking some individual quality so I went with something different with Ryan and George (Cooper) and there were flashes with George having a good run and Ryan having a couple of efforts. We know there is work to do but we are pleased to have come out with a point."
"We haven't lost the game and we stuck at it and the effort was there. We just need to get on the ball more and be more creative. We were too slow in making our passses and that has to improve. That wasn't evident from the work we have done in pre-season. We were slow in some of our decision making and the best move we had in the 91st minute when we nearly squeezed a late ball over the top but that is sometimes hard in a derby game when the space is narrow.
"We had a few little spells in the second half but we found it hard at times to break through and we didn't create too many chances of our own but we were resolute. We found it hard to get enough from the middle three and the front three in terms of the movement. We knew it wouldn't be perfect today, we can only get better and we knew it would be hard game because they always are against Port Vale, but we have come away with a point so that is a positive.
"I thought the two Ben's were excellent and George as well. I thought the back four defended well. Ollie was excellent at right back as well and Jon stuck at it and had to defend well because Byron (Moore) was a handful at times with his pace. I thought the back four were excellent. They had a lot of work to do and a lot of decisions to make so I was pleased with them.
"If I am honest if you look at the play, I thought that Port Vale had the better of the possession and the better of the chances. We were second best today but the real positive is the way we defended and the fact that we got a point and a clean-sheet. Steve Davis says it was a real positive to pick up a point from the opening game of the season after Port Vale enjoyed the better of the chances at Gresty Road. In an honest assessment following the goalless draw, the Crewe Alexandra boss told the club's official web-site:
