Alex boss says Wigan Athletic will be real contenders once their new-look squads gels.
Steve Davis believes that Wigan Athletic will be serious contenders for an instant return to the Championship once their new-look squad settles down. Following relegation from the second tier, the Latics boss Gary Caldwell has had to embark on a rebuilding mission. A large turn around in players has occurred by the club have still paid £1 million for MK Dons striker Will Grigg, Max Power from Tranmere and landed the vastly experienced goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen.
Ahead of this weekend’s trip to the DW Stadium, Steve told the club’s official web-site: “It is always tough when a club is relegated and the negativity that comes from that. Blackpool are finding it hard to adjust but I’m sure Wigan will be fine once they gel as a team.
“They will have enough in their squad to compete at the top end of the league. I’m sure Gary (Caldwell) will get them up and running soon enough. It is still very early in the season and they have had to bring a lot of players in. They have added a number of young players to their squad and they will need some time.
“Gary was an absolute legend as a player for Wigan and it is a tough first job for someone but he will work as hard as anyone to turn the club around. They have had a summer of transition but in time I’m sure they will come good.
“I’ve watched them a couple of times already and they have a lot of quality in their side. They have been playing with three centre-halves and are a big and strong unit but they also have some very good footballers in key positions.
He added: “I’m sure Gary is still searching for his best eleven and once they gel and gain confidence they will be a force in this league. We know it will be another tough away game on Saturday but we can take confidence from the way we approached our last away game at Coventry and will give it another good go.”
