New capture Ben Nugent tells Crewe Alex PlayerHD why the other lads were quick to tell him about derby day.
Crewe Alexandra’s latest summer signing Ben Nugent says he has been told in no uncertain terms by the other players about what our local derby against Port Vale means this weekend.
Nugent, 22, signed a two-year deal on Monday after agreeing a free transfer from Cardiff City and has only trained with his new team-mates over the last couple of days, but the towering centre-half has revealed to Crewe Alex Player that he was quickly informed about the importance of Saturday’s opener at Gresty Road.
Nugent, who has also enjoyed loan spells at Peterborough and Brentford, is hoping to do enough in training this weekend to convince boss Steve Davis that he is worthy of making his debut in our local derby this weekend.
Ben told Crewe Alex PlayerHD: “I am delighted to be here and I cannot wait forth season to start. I am at the point now in my career where I need to be playing regularly. I want to get as many games as I can under my belt and push on.
“It is always difficult going out on loan and then returning to your club. I have been on loan three times with varied success and I didn’t really want to do that again. I am a Crewe player, I have that stability of being a permanent player now and I want to help this club have a good season.
“Everyone at the club has made me feel really welcome and I feel good. I have done the pre-season at Cardiff and feel fit and ready. I want to train well this week and declare myself available for selection for Saturday.
“The lads were quick to tell me about the derby. It is one of first things we spoke about and what it means to the supporters. There is nothing quite like a local derby and to start the season with one gives it an extra edge.
“It should be a great atmosphere and should be really exciting for everyone. I am sure everyone is looking forward to the game and the new season. Hopefully we will give our fans something to cheer about this weekend.”
