Ben Garratt heading in the right direction under experienced coach.
Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Ben Garratt says that Fred Barber’s decision to remain with the club instead of taking up a similar coaching role at Blackpool has provided him with a huge boost going into the early part of the season.
The highly-promising Garratt claimed the man-of-the-match award against rivals Port Vale at the weekend after he made a number of important saves to make sure we acquired a clean-sheet and a point for our efforts. It was Garratt’s first competitive game since fracturing his leg away at Barnsley in February.
Garratt has worked closely with the vastly experienced Barber for the past six months after the former Northern Ireland coach was drafted in to replace Scott Shearer.
Ben told Crewe Alex PlayerHD: “Fred’s decision not to go was massive for myself, Dave (Richards) and the other young goalkeepers at the club. I get on very well with Fred and we have a good relationship.
“When I heard he might be going then I was very disappointed, so I am more than happy that he has decided to stay and I look forward to working with him because he is a great coach.
“His record and experience speaks for itself and he has brought so many goalkeepers on to play at the top of the game, so you know you are going the right way if he is telling you how to play.”
