Barber U-Turn Will See Ben Progress

12 August 2015

Boss pleased that Barber returned to complete 'unfinished business'

Steve Davis is delighted that his experienced goalkeeping coach Fred Barber elected to reject a possible move to League One rivals Blackpool to remain with us. The Crewe Alexandra manager says that the former Bolton and Northern Ireland coach will only continue to help Ben Garratt improve as one of the country’s most promising young goalkeepers.

The Crewe Alexandra boss told crewealex.net: “Fred went to Blackpool initially to talk and was then meant to go back and sign a contract but he felt he had unfinished business with us and wanted to stay.

“We had a conversation and he just felt he hadn’t finished what he came for. He enjoys the environment, working with the people we have here and he saw developing Ben and Dave as an exciting challenge.

“He has helped Ben enormously and they have a good relationship. He works the goalkeepers hard and they will continue to improve because of his work ethic and experience.

“Ben has grown in stature and everyone can see that he is heading in the right direction under Fred’s guidance. That is why we were so keen to keep him here.”
