Attacking Left Back Remains Priority

13 August 2015

Steve still determined to bring in new left-back to make a difference to us on that side.

Crewe Alexandra boss Steve Davis is determined to bring in a more attack minded left-back. Jon Guthrie has been filling in on the left hand side as Davis waits for news about a potential target from a Championship club. Guthrie’s long term future is seen more in central defence than at full-back, but the former Pewsey Vale defender says he is prepared to play anywhere across the back line as long as he stays in the team.

Davis is looking for a left footer though who can offer more of an attacking threat down that side of the pitch.

Following the 3-1 defeat to Preston in the League Cup, Steve told crewealex.net: “We need a left back, one who can get forward more and offer us an attacking threat from that side of the pitch. It would give us a different option in the final third.

“Jon has done fine there but it was always seen as a temporary measure until we can get one in. Jon has filled in there and done fine. We see him more of as a centre-half and he knows that. He is fine defensively but he is still learning the position and isn’t going to burst past the opposition full-back.

He added: “We will continue to try and bring someone in who can create more from that side of the pitch. We have one in mind but if that doesn’t materialise then we have one or two more options.”
