Steve: "We Had To Work Hard For Point"

11 April 2015

Boss gives us his post-match reaction following 1-1 at Gresty Road

Steve Davis praised the effort of his players as they emerged with a point against what was an impressive Leyton Orient side. Crewe had taken the lead after 10 minutes through the Finn Lauri Dalla Valle but Darius Henderson levelled things up on the half an hour mark with a side foot volley.

Crewe had goalkeeper Paul Rachubka to thank for keeping us in the contest with one superb save denying Chris Dagnall a potential winner after he had broken the offside trap.

After the 1-1 draw at the Alexandra Stadium, Steve told the club's official web-site: "In the end we had to work very hard to get a point.

"First half we played fairly well and deserved our goal. The wind was a major factor and it was difficult to get the ball forward in the second half. We were under a lot of pressure, we made some great blocks and the keeper made some great saves and we did well to get going again.

"The loss of the two midfielders affected what we could do, we were forced into substitutions when we didn’t want to make them. The shape had been working well so it made things difficult in the second half.

"We weren’t very good in the second half but all I can do is praise them for their effort when the quality is not there, they showed real determination.

"We came off with a point and, in the context of what’s left, it could be an important point. We haven’t played as well as we’d have liked but the battling quality was in evidence and we came out with something in the end.

"He was good, Paul (Rachubka), he found it difficult when he first came here  but he made some important saves and I was pleased with his performance.

"I thought the back four were fine apart from, at times, in possession and Ryan (Colclough) was the most likely to create something for him so, although we was out on his feet, I thought he was good and it was worth the gamble to keep him on."

"They (Orient) shouldn’t be where they are, they have vastly underachieved this season and we were under no illusions as to how hard it was going to be because of the quality they’ve got."Steve added:
