Steve Davis says selection can still come down to training performance this week

Steve Davis says the race for places for this weekend’s trip to Coventry City will continue all week. The Alex boss has reiterated to his players that places are very much up for grabs and can depend on how they perform in training this week.

Crewe Alexandra travel to the Ricoh Arena hoping to secure what would be a massive three points in our quest to remain in League One.

Steve has stressed the importance of training well and used the decision to replace Marcus Haber with Ryan Colclough on Saturday, instead of the bigger Uche Ikpeazu as the perfect example.

Steve explained to crewealex.net: “Uche didn’t have a good week in training. It looked as though his confidence was a bit low and we have spent a lot of time rebuilding that confidence after he chose to go on loan somewhere else.

“In Uche’s case, it is shame that there are only two games left and not two months left of the season but I’ve said to him that he still has a massive part to play in these last two games.

“He was the more natural fit with Marcus going off on Saturday but I wanted to try a different approach and went with Ryan.

“To be fair to Uche, he was excellent yesterday. He had a real positive day and he will be judged like everyone else. If he trains well then I could well pick him to start. We always consider how they train in the week when it comes to selection.

He added: “If they have a productive week then there is no reason why they cannot carry that on into the weekend game.”
