Few Contenders To Play In Goal

1 April 2015

Boss says some of his players woud embrace playing in goal if it came to it.

Steve Davis admits that there are a few willing contenders if anything was to happen to first choice goalkeeper Paul Rachubka in a match situation. If Rachubka was to be injured or sent-off in a match, the Alex boss knows that he has a few options when it comes to his outfield players going in goal.

Crewe are waiting for Ben Garratt to make a full recovery from his fractured leg and it is hoped that the talented stopper will make a successful return to first-team action before the end of the season.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We actually have a few who would be prepared to go in goal if we needed them to.

“We have had a few contenders and the trick is that an outfield player has to want to do it. I went in goal during my career and I actually quite enjoyed it. It is a very different situation than an outfield player and it isn’t for everyone.

“We have three or four who would fancy it. Alan Tate is well equipped to do it. He has done it before for Swansea. I think he was in goal for about 70 minutes. Tateyhas that experience.

“Granty has also volunteered, so there are options but hopefully it won’t come to that.”
