We Have Gifted Goals Away

4 September 2014

Steve Davis says opposition teams are not having to open us up to score goals

Steve Davis has told the club’s official web-site that Crewe Alexandra has to quickly eradicate defensive mistakes if we are going to halt a disappointing start to the season.

Crewe have already conceded 19 goals this season in all competitions and the Alex boss was left frustrated after his team let in three more avoidable goals against Rochdale on Tuesday evening.

The manager says it is not entirely the fault of the back four or goalkeeper but he is looking for improvement as a complete defensive unit.

Steve told crewealex.net: “We cannot continue to concede the goals like we did on Tuesday night. The opposition do not have to carve us open with outstanding football to score goals. We have been gifting too many goals away.

“It isn’t one or two individuals. It has been a collective thing and we need to be tighter and make it difficult for the opposition to score.

“Against Rochdale, the lad has headed it back from the by-line and Brad (Inman) didn’t track his man back and it was too easy for him to finish.

“The second goal has come from virtually a free header at a corner and the third goal Scott (Shearer) couldn’t have seen the striker lurking behind Duggy. So we gave the goals away and it doesn’t matter at what level you play at, you cannot afford to make mistakes like that if we want to stay in games and win them.”
