Steve: "Ten Minute Spell Showed Our Fragility"

27 September 2014

Crewe very much in the game until Sears opening goal

Steve Davis couldn't quite believe that a crazy ten-minute spell cost his side at the Alexandra Stadium. It had been a pretty even affair until Freddie Sears opened the scoring on 57 minutes when he calmly slotted home at the far post. Two more goals in quick succession from substitute Rhys Healey and a close range tap in from Sanchez Watt condemned Crewe to their 7th defeat of the campaign.

Afterwards the Alex boss told crewealex.net: "It was good until the goals, just that ten minute spell has just showed up our fragility at the moment.

“After Sears banged that one in, some of our players went a little bit for that ten minute spell. We’ve got to manage the game a little bit at 1-0 and go again and we weren’t able to see that period through – we paid the price for that.

“I thought we had the better of the start of the second half. We had three great chances and one of them hit the post. It that would have gone in then the complexion of the game would’ve been different.

“We weren’t a threat enough in the attacking third after the goals went in. I thought Billy played well and there were one or two decent performances but if you take the goals away then there wasn’t a lot between the two teams.

The boss added: “There’s no point me going and lambasting them all again. They’re already down and we’ve got to pick them up again for Tuesday. We’ve got to do better. There was a tremendous amount of effort but maybe just that lack of quality.”
